Let the Sun Shine Down on Me

featuring Caroline Burke, Julia Napolitano and Thea Piltzecker

Roll on clouds in the mornin’
Roll on clouds in the mornin’
Roll on clouds in the mornin’
Let the sun shine down on me

Bound away for glory
I’m bound for glory and deliverance
Roll on clouds in the mornin’
Let the sun shine down on me

I looked up this mornin’
Deep down trouble I see
Yes I looked up this mornin’
Let the sun shine down on me

Saw that big cloud risin’
Hard trouble I see
Heard my mother cryin’
Let the sun shine down on me

I know there’s a great day comin’
When no more trouble I see
When we’ll all shout together
Let the sun shine down on me

Roll on clouds in the mornin’
Let the sun shine down on me
Roll on clouds in the mornin’
Let the sun shine down on me
Measure Me Sky
Elaine Hagenberg
text by Leonora Speyer (1872-1956)
Measure me, sky!
Tell me I reach by a song
Nearer the stars;
I have been little so long.
Horizon, reach out!
Catch at my hands, stretch me taut,
Rim of the world:
Widen my eyes by a thought.
Sky, be my depth,
Wind, be my width and my height,
World, my heart's span;
Loveliness, wings for my flight.
We Make Music
Drew Corey
text from We Make Music by Drew Dellinger
Scattered shards of shattered stars
We exist amidst the stars
We make music
Away From the Roll of the Sea
Allister MacGillivray
arr. Diane Loomer
Small craft in a harbour that’s still and serene
give no indication what their ways have been.
They rock at their moorings all nestled in dreams.
Away from the roll of the sea
Their stern lines are groaning a lullaby air,
a ghost in the cuddy a gull on the spar.
But never they whisper of journeys afar,
Away from the roll of the sea.
Oh had they the tongues for to speak
What tales of adventure they’d weave.
But now they are anchored to sleep and slumber alee
Come fair winds to wake them tomorrow we pray.
Come harvest a plenty to them everyday.
‘til guided by harbour lights they're home to stay,
Away from the roll of the sea.

Lalla, a 14th century Sufi-mystic poet from the Kashmir region of India, believed strongly in the development of the self while reaching enlightenment. The metaphor of dancing while feeling free or naked exemplifies the beauty of empowerment and self-worth. This work uses influences of Classical Indian music and other vocal effects to allow Lalla's message to come to life.

Excerpts of poetry by Lalla

Meditate within eternity.
Don't stay in the mind.

The soul, like the moon,
is new, and always new again.

Since I scoured my mind
and my body, I too, Lalla,
am new, each moment new.

My teacher told me,
live in the soul.

When that was so,
I began to go naked,
and dance.

Dance, Lalla, with nothing on
but air. Sing, Lalla,
wearing the sky.

Look at this glowing day!
What clothes could be more
beautiful, or more sacred?

English translation by Coleman Barks
Sunrise
Composed for the Lux Mea Choir by David Caldarella

You have risen early
before any creature stirs
you have acknowledged the void of silence

You have risen early
You have gathered what you need,
before any creature stirs,
you have trekked to the highest rooftop

You have heard the birds crescendo
and seen their flight
The golden streams dancing in the wild trees
you have wondered where your sunrise is.

But always remember,
That birds sing best in darkness,
that the river likes to flow in dawn light

But always remember,
that the wild trees blow strongest in the twilight wind
when the light is veiled before your sunrise
Cloths of Heaven
Eleanor Daley
Text: W.B. Yeats - 1865-1939
Had I the heavens' embroidered cloths,
Enwrought with golden and silver light,
The blue and the dim and the dark cloths
Of night and light and the half light,
I would spread the cloths under your feet:
But I, being poor, have only my dreams;
I have spread my dreams under your feet;
Tread softly because you tread on my dreams.
No Time
arr. Susan Brumfield
Rise, oh fathers rise,
let's go meet 'em in the skies,
we will hear the angels singing
in that morning.

Rise, oh mothers rise,
let's go meet 'em in the skies,
we will hear the angels singing
in that morning.

Oh I really do believe
that just before the end of time,
we will hear the angels singing
in that morning.

No time to tarry here,
no time to wait for you,
no time to tarry here,
for I'm on my journey home.

Brothers, oh fare ye well,
brothers, oh fare ye well,
brothers, oh fare ye well,
for I'm on my journey home.

Sisters, oh fare ye well,
sisters, oh fare ye well,
sisters, oh fare ye well,
for I'm on my journey home.
The Storm is Passing Over
arr. Barbara W. Baker
Have courage my soul
and let us journey on.
Though the night is dark
and I am far from home.

Thanks be to God
the morning light appears.

The storm is passing over
Halleluia!
Will the Circle Be Unbroken
arr. J. David Moore

featuring Caroline Burke, Jayne Edwards and Julia Napolitano
Will the circle be unbroken by and by, Lord, by and by?
There’s a better home a-waiting if we try, Lord, if we try.

I was singing with my sisters
I was singing with my friends
And we all can sing together,
‘Cause the circle never ends.

I was born down in the valley
Where the sun refused to shine
But I’m climbing up to the highland
Gonna make that mountain mine
